Kazakhstan to Receive Over 560 Million Cubic Meters of Water from Kyrgyzstan for 2024 Irrigation Season

Kazakhstan will receive more than 560 million cubic meters of water from Kyrgyzstan during the 2024 irrigation season. Specifically, 180 million cubic meters will flow via the Shu River and 380 million cubic meters via the Talas River.

This agreement was reached by Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov during the 33rd meeting of the Shu-Talas Water Commission, which includes representatives from both countries. The press service of the department reported on the agreement and additional plans for repair and restoration work on water management facilities along the Shu and Talas rivers.

In addition, Kazakhstan has secured an agreement with Uzbekistan for the supply of 922 million cubic meters of water through the Dostyk interstate canal.

“International cooperation is one of the key areas of work for our ministry,” said Minister Nurzhigitov. “In preparation for the irrigation season, extensive efforts were made to ensure farmers in the south of the country receive the necessary volumes of water. Significant negotiations took place with neighboring countries. Today, we have reached an agreement with the Ministry of Water Resources of Kyrgyzstan to increase water supply along the Shu and Talas rivers from the beginning of the third ten days of June. Currently, we are working with our Kyrgyz colleagues to adjust the water supply schedules towards an increase.”
