Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan Sign Strategic Green Energy Partnership

At the COP29 World Climate Summit, the presidents of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan—Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Ilham Aliyev, and Shavkat Mirziyoyev—signed a landmark agreement to integrate their countries’ energy systems and strengthen cooperation in green energy production and transmission.

President Tokayev highlighted the significance of the agreement, calling it “a new chapter in our shared commitment to sustainable development.” He emphasized that this Strategic Partnership Agreement is a crucial milestone in the trilateral cooperation of Central Asia and the South Caucasus, offering enhanced opportunities for energy integration and establishing reliable green energy corridors to European and other markets. Tokayev noted Kazakhstan’s pivotal role as a transit hub, pointing to the “Middle Corridor” as a potential “green bridge” connecting the region’s economies.

For Kazakhstan, committed to carbon neutrality, green energy remains a priority. Tokayev stated that Kazakhstan is actively reducing its reliance on fossil fuels by advancing technological innovations and building infrastructure to support environmental resilience. He announced agreements with international partners to develop green energy projects with a combined capacity of 43 GW.

Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev emphasized that the agreement elevates the strong, brotherly ties among the three nations to a new level. “The regions of Central Asia and the Caucasus work in harmony on many fronts, including green energy. We recognize Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan’s significant achievements in renewable energy development,” Aliyev stated.

President Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan also underscored the agreement’s broader vision, saying it represents a collective contribution to the future. “The energy transmitted will be from wind and solar sources, thus reducing climate impact. In doing so, we support joint climate protection efforts within the Paris Agreement framework and contribute to sustainable development goals,” he remarked.

In addition, with the heads of state present, the energy ministers of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Saudi Arabia signed an Executive Program to further cooperation in green energy development and transmission.
