Kazakhstan Assumes Chairmanship of CSTO, Outlines Priorities for 2024

As of January 1, 2024, Kazakhstan has commenced its chairmanship of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), TuraNews.kz reports.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized key priorities for Kazakhstan’s leadership in the CSTO. He proposed a focus on maintaining strong collaboration with the United Nations and its structures, building on the foundation of the Joint Declaration on Cooperation between the CSTO and the UN, dated March 18, 2010.

President Tokayev expressed a commitment to further deepening cooperation with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). He highlighted specific measures outlined in “Practical measures to strengthen cooperation of the CSTO with the CIS and the SCO.”

The second crucial area of focus is enhancing military cooperation, with an emphasis on refining the regulatory framework to facilitate the rapid deployment of CSTO Collective Forces. President Tokayev stressed the importance of unlocking the peacekeeping potential of the organization, particularly through the activities of the Special Representative of the CSTO Secretary General on peacekeeping issues.

Addressing the global challenges of our time, President Tokayev identified the development of cooperation in countering international terrorism and extremism as another top priority for Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the CSTO.
