“Kambarat-1” Hydroelectric Power Plant Construction Discussed in Tashkent

Ministers of Energy from three countries met in Tashkent to discuss the feasibility of the "Kambarat-1" project.

The “Kambarat-1” Hydroelectric Power Plant, which will be built in Kyrgyzstan, has the potential to meet the energy demands of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan to a certain extent. If the project is successful, it could pave the way for energy exports to other countries in the future, generating profits, according to 24.kz.

On January 27, a meeting was held in Tashkent to discuss the construction of the “Kambarat-1” HPP. The energy ministers of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, as well as the World Bank’s Central Asia representative, attended as investors.

The station will have a capacity of 1,800 megawatts. In this project, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will each hold 33% of the shares, while Kyrgyzstan will own 34%. After repaying the investor’s loan, the three countries will equally share the profits. The construction is expected to take 10 years, with an investment of 6 billion USD.

Sungat Esimkhanov, Deputy Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan: “The construction of the Kambarat-1 hydroelectric power station will help maintain the water regime of all three countries. Secondly, while not fully solving all energy issues, it will contribute to solving some of them. For our southern regions, the construction of this HPP is beneficial as we currently supply energy from the northern part of the country. Lastly, once the project is operational, exporting power will benefit all three countries.”
