Kamala Harris Ready to Debate Donald Trump as Presidential Campaign Heats Up
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that she is prepared to debate Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Her comments were reported by Politico following President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Harris stated, “Trump agreed to this earlier. Now he has backed off. I am ready to go [to the debate],” expressing her willingness to engage in a direct confrontation with Trump.
In May, Trump and President Joe Biden had initially agreed to participate in debates scheduled for June 27 on CNN and September 10 on ABC. However, the June debate proved challenging for Biden, leading to increased pressure from Democrats and sponsors for him to step aside.
On July 21, President Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. In a national address, he explained his decision by emphasizing that “democracy is more important than personal ambitions.” He stated, “I believe that my accomplishments as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future deserve a second term, but nothing, including personal ambition, can get in the way of preserving our democracy. I decided that the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation, that’s the best way to unite our people.”
President Biden also urged Americans to support Vice President Harris as the new Democratic candidate. In response, Trump labeled Biden “the worst president in the history of the country” and claimed that it would be “much easier” to defeat Harris if she becomes the Democratic nominee.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump referred to Biden’s exit from the race as a “coup,” asserting, “They didn’t want him to run. He was down in the polls, and they thought he was going to lose. They came to him and said, ‘You can’t win this race,’ which I think is true.”
Following Trump’s interview, Harris’s campaign released a statement describing Trump as “old and kind of weird” and argued that “this guy should never be president again.”
As the 2024 presidential campaign unfolds, Harris’s readiness to debate Trump signals a potentially heated race for the White House, with both candidates aiming to galvanize their supporters and address the nation’s key issues.
