Iran and Turkmenistan Plan to Boost Freight Transport and Transit

Iran and Turkmenistan discussed a cooperation roadmap to increase the volume of freight transport and transit between the two countries to 20 million tons per year.

According to Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, Iranian Minister Farzaneh Sadigh met with Turkmen Minister of Transport and Communications Mammetkhan Chakiyev in Ashgabat on March 28.

The talks focused on expanding land and rail transit, enhancing transportation through Iran’s Lotfabad border terminal, reducing customs duties, and facilitating road traffic between the two nations.

The ministers also discussed increasing the number of flights between cities to improve passenger transportation.

Cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan within the TRACECA framework was another key topic of discussion.

In the short term, both sides aim to increase railway transit to 10 million tons by the end of 2027.
