Initial qualification rules approved for the 2028 Olympic Games

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee has approved the first set of qualification systems for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles, the United States, BasSport.kz reports.

The decision was made during a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, where qualification criteria for 26 sports and disciplines were presented and endorsed. These include badminton, basketball and 3×3 basketball, BMX, multiple cycling disciplines, canoe and kayak sprint, equestrian sports, fencing, handball, judo, swimming, rugby sevens, sailing, shooting, taekwondo, volleyball, and beach volleyball.

Qualification systems for the remaining sports are expected to be submitted to the IOC Executive Board in early 2026. In most cases, the qualification process will be based on proven models used in previous Olympic Games. All regulations will require final approval by the IOC.

It is also noted that the qualification system for the Los Angeles Games will offer athletes at least two different pathways to secure Olympic quotas.
