Ilham Aliyev: “Azerbaijan’s current target is renewable energy”

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan has a renewable energy potential of about 200 gigawatts, "We have attracted large investments in the oil and gas sector. Now our target is renewable energy. We have big plans and I am confident that we will achieve these works." he said.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the Sustainability Week held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Aliyev emphasized the importance of renewable energy sources and stated that Azerbaijan has a great potential in this field, that they will diversify their exports by developing renewable energy sources.

Also Aliyev noted that they will both diversify their exports and they will create an environmentally friendly economy.

There is a wind energy potential of 157 gigawatts

Aliyev said that they and the partners completed the Southern Gas Corridor Project two years ago and they built a natural gas pipeline of 3,500 kilometers from Azerbaijan to Southern Europe.

While noting that Azerbaijan’s natural gas exports have increased, Aliyev said:

“In 2021, we exported 19 billion cubic meters of natural gas. This year this figure will reach 24 billion cubic meters and will continue to increase. Our renewable energy potential is as follows: 27 gigawatts of wind and sun on land, 10 gigawatts of wind and sun in our liberated lands, Caspian Sea. “There is a wind energy potential of 157 gigawatts in the Azerbaijani part of Türkiye. In other words, we have a renewable energy potential of about 200 gigawatts. We need export routes. We are implementing all these projects step by step.”
