Hungary Supports Bosnia and Herzegovina’s EU Membership, Signs Cooperation Plan

Hungary has expressed its support for Bosnia and Herzegovina's aspirations to join the European Union (EU) by signing an action plan for foreign policy cooperation.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó made the announcement during a visit to Sarajevo, emphasizing the importance of launching early negotiations for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s European integration.

Minister Szijjártó urged the EU to adopt a more constructive approach, advising against “threatening and blackmailing” the Western Balkans in pursuit of successful integration. He asserted that Western Balkan integration could infuse the EU with “new impetus, new energy, and ambition.”

During a joint press conference with Bosnian counterpart Elmedin Konakovic, Szijjártó stated, “The European Union is at least as interested in your rapid accession as you are in becoming a member.” He highlighted Hungary’s commitment to expediting the integration process in the Western Balkans during its upcoming EU presidency.

Szijjártó emphasized that the swift integration of the region could contribute to “stability and tranquility” in both Hungary and other countries. He cautioned against any actions that impede Western Balkan integration, stating, “Everyone who slows down the integration of the Western Balkans is working against security in the EU and the interests of the Western Balkans.”

The Hungarian presidency aims to prioritize the initiation of accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, which applied for EU membership eight years ago. The signing of the foreign policy cooperation action plan underscores Hungary’s commitment to fostering EU ties with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
