Hungary opposes Sweden’s NATO membership over provocative Film

Hungary is against Sweden’s entry into NATO after a provocative film criticizing Hungary’s foreign and domestic policies, according to a Hungarian politician quoted by RIA Novosti.

The film, which is an educational film produced by Swedish public service television, portrays Hungary as a country with a decline in democratic values. Hungary’s Speaker of Parliament Laszlo Kever has said that the country is wondering about the need for such an “ally.”

The film has caused a storm of criticism from Hungary. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a message clearly hinting at the difficulties in admitting Sweden after such publications.

Hungary is one of the few NATO member states that has not yet ratified Sweden’s accession to the alliance. The other country that has not ratified Sweden’s membership is Türkiye.
