Hungary Announces Withdrawal from the International Criminal Court

Hungary has officially declared its decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The announcement was made by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Chief of Staff, Gergely Gulyás.

The move coincides with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Budapest. On the same day his visit began, the ICC issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.

As a current member of the ICC, Hungary is legally obliged to arrest him upon entry. However, Orbán assured Netanyahu that he faced no risk while in Hungary. The Hungarian government has also repeatedly blocked EU joint statements calling for a ceasefire and protection of civilians in Gaza.
