
The amendment also reinforces traditional family values, declaring that “marriage is a union between a man and a woman,” and that “the father is male, the mother is female.”
The legislation, backed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party, passed with 140 votes in favor and 21 against—enough for a constitutional majority.
Critics argue that the move targets LGBTQ+ communities and may pave the way for stricter bans on pride parades. In protest, opposition supporters rallied near the parliament building, in a demonstration organized by the small Momentum party.
The amendment follows Hungary’s recent announcement to exit the International Criminal Court.
