Hungarian Parliament Gives Nod to Sweden’s NATO Membership

This decision marks Hungary as the final among the 31 NATO member states to ratify Sweden's application to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

On February 26, the Hungarian Parliament voted to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO, with 188 deputies voting in favor and six against.

The application process began when Finland and Sweden jointly applied for NATO membership in May 2022. Helsinki officially joined the alliance on April 4, 2023.

This decision marks Hungary as the final among the 31 NATO member states to ratify Sweden’s application to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

In January 2024, Türkiye also endorsed Sweden’s bid for NATO membership. Hungary was the last country to ratify Stockholm’s application.

Following the vote in the Hungarian parliament, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson hailed the occasion as a historic day for his country.
