Doctors at a Bishkek hospital successfully conducted a unique operation to remove a strand of hair from the brain of an 8-year-old girl, a procedure necessary to safeguard the patient’s health, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.
The surgery, performed at the neurosurgery department of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, involved a team led by renowned academician and professor Mitalip Mamytov, along with specialists from the neurosurgery department led by Bakyt Karachev.
The young patient, a schoolgirl from the Jalal-Abad region, had been diagnosed with a mass formation in the bottom of the 4th ventricle of her brain.
“The operation to remove the teratoma was successful,” noted the Ministry of Health. “The teratoma contained a tuft of hair, which had evidently grown over the course of the child’s entire life prior to admission to the hospital. The hair, originating from a root at the bottom of the ventricle, may have been linked to an intrauterine developmental disorder. Continued hair growth posed a serious threat to the patient’s health.”
