Hagia Sophia Welcomes 40 Million Visitors in Five Years

Hagia Sophia, one of Türkiye’s most iconic landmarks, has attracted more than 40 million visitors over the past five years since its reconversion into a mosque in 2020, Türkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced.

According to the minister, the mosque receives nearly 50,000 visitors daily, a number comparable to the population of several European countries. “This achievement is a source of national pride and underlines Hagia Sophia’s status as a key UNESCO World Heritage site and a global tourist attraction,” Ersoy said.

The historic structure is currently undergoing extensive restoration. The project includes the installation of an artificial intelligence–based security system, enhanced video surveillance, interior renovations, as well as restoration of the main dome and minarets.
