Georgia Tightens Immigration Rules

Georgia is introducing stricter regulations for the employment of foreign nationals, including remote workers, according to Deutsche Welle.

Under the new rules, foreigners must obtain a D1 work visa or a residence permit before signing an employment contract. The requirements also apply to self-employed individuals registered as sole proprietors, even if they provide services remotely. IT specialists and freelancers are expected to be among those most affected.

The measures could complicate the situation for migrants, including Ukrainian refugees and Russian nationals who left their country following mobilization.

Authorities have already announced plans to toughen migration policy starting October 1. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that in 2025 more undocumented migrants were deported than during the previous decade, with an additional 20,000 deportations planned.

Border and internal controls have been strengthened. The Interior Ministry has been granted expanded powers to identify immigration violators, including the right to inspect foreigners’ residences. Street document checks have increased, and deportation procedures have been simplified.

Fines for overstaying have also risen sharply — from 180 lari to 1,000 lari (approximately 316 euros).
