Georgia declares day of mourning after landslide kills 7, leaves 30 missing

The landslide occurred in the village of Shovi, a mountain resort in the Racha region of western Georgia, on the evening of August 3. According to geologists, about 5 million cubic meters of land fell from the mountain, demolishing several cottages and private houses, Turanews.kz reports.

Rescue workers have been searching for survivors since the landslide, but the operation has been hampered by heavy rains and difficult terrain. The Ministry of Defense of Georgia has joined the rescue effort, and helicopters have been deployed to help with the search.

The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered. The landslide is the deadliest natural disaster in Georgia in recent years.

The government has declared a day of mourning in memory of the victims. All public events have been canceled, and flags will be flown at half-staff.

The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, has visited the site of the landslide and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He has also ordered an investigation into the cause of the landslide.
