Gennadiy Golovkin Relinquishes WBA Middleweight Title

Gennadiy Golovkin has vacated his WBA middleweight title, the organization announced Thursday. GGG informed the WBA of his decision earlier Thursday ahead of a scheduled March 13 purse bid for a matchup against Erislandy Lara, the WBA’s “regular” champion, as the organization continues to consolidate titles.

“Golovkin asked me to contact you to inform about his future intentions. He is proud to have become the WBA Super Middleweight Champion and unified the middleweight titles in Japan against Ryota Murata last year.

Although Gennady is still determined to fight again, yet he has not made up his mind on many points that are critical to planning and organizing his next fight. In light of the approaching deadline to apply for the Erislandy Lara fight, Gennady doesn’t want the process to drag on any longer. That’s why, please be aware that Gennady Golovkin hereby waives the WBA middleweight title,” Golovkin’s spokesman John Hornever said in a letter to the WBA.

40-year-old Golovkin scored 42 victories in his career with two defeats, one fight ended in a draw.
