Former Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev may face 11 years in prison

In Bishkek, the trial over the August 2019 Koi-Tash incident continues. Former President Almazbek Atambayev is among the accused, along with ex-lawmakers and officials, according to Kazinform.

Criminal cases involving illegal land seizure, coal supply to the Bishkek thermal power plant, and the Koi-Tash incident were merged into one. The prosecution has requested 11-year sentences for Atambayev and former security officer Kanat Sagymbayev, and 10 years for Ravshan Jeenbekov, Farida Niyazova, and others. Suspended sentences are sought for four other defendants.

On August 7, 2019, an operation to detain Atambayev at his Koi-Tash residence turned violent, injuring 45 people. The next day, President Sooronbay Jeenbekov accused Atambayev of armed resistance and violating the constitution.
