The incident, which unfolded on the Tunektepe Teleferik cable car, occurred when one of the support structures collapsed, striking a cabin carrying eight passengers.
The impact caused the cabin’s floor to give way, resulting in passengers plummeting several meters to the ground. Among the injured were two children, who were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Following the accident, some passengers found themselves stranded in halted cabins, prompting a rescue operation involving firefighters and a Coast Guard helicopter.
While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, eyewitnesses recounted hearing a loud explosion preceding the cable car’s sudden halt.
The gondola-style cable car, constructed in 2017, spans a length of 1.7 kilometers, ascending to a height of 605 meters atop Mount Tunektepe, the city’s highest point boasting a scenic observation deck. The cable car route is owned by the municipality, serving as a popular tourist attraction in Antalya.
