On May 20, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei announced five days of public mourning to honor the martyrdom of President Raisi and his accompanying officials.
President Raisi, the eighth President of Iran, passed away in a helicopter crash during the night of May 19-20. The crash also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the Supreme Leader’s representative in East Azerbaijan and Friday prayer leader in Tabriz Seyed Mohammad Ali al-Hashemi, and East Azerbaijan’s governor Malik Rahmeti.
