Last night, the Telmen somon in Zavkhan aimag, northwestern Mongolia, experienced an unprecedented low temperature of minus 38.1 degrees Celsius, according to reports from the country’s Institute of Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring on Thursday, TuraNews.kz reports citing the Xinhua news.
Following the extreme cold that swept across much of Mongolia on Wednesday night, heavy snowfall covered the aimags of Sukhbaatar, Khentii, Dornod, and Dornogov. Due to challenging weather conditions, roads in the eastern aimags of Dornod and Dornogovi, bordering China, were temporarily closed, as stated in an official announcement.
Meteorologists predict that severe frosts will persist in Mongolia until the end of this week. Mongolia generally faces long and harsh winters, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 45 degrees below zero.
It’s worth noting that Mongolia holds a historical record for its coldest weather, marked on December 26, 1966, when the Zuungov soum of the Uvs aimag in northwestern Mongolia recorded a bone-chilling minus 55.6 degrees Celsius.
