EU Court Imposes €200 Million Fine on Hungary

The European Court has mandated that Hungary pay a fine of €200 million for failing to adhere to EU asylum regulations. Additionally, Hungary faces an extra penalty of €1 million for each day of delay in compliance.

This decision follows a December 2020 ruling where the court determined that Hungary had not met the EU’s standards for providing international protection and managing the return of illegal migrants.

“The court found that Hungary had not taken the necessary actions to implement the 2020 decision. This deliberate evasion of applying the EU’s common policies represents an unprecedented and extremely serious breach of European law,” stated the court’s announcement.
