EU considers suspending Hungary’s voting rights in Council
The European Union is weighing the possibility of temporarily suspending Hungary’s voting rights in the EU Council. According to EU officials, the move comes amid growing concerns that Hungary is undermining core values such as the rule of law and freedom of expression.

A hearing on the matter was held on May 27, as outlined in the official Council agenda. This marks the eighth such session since the European Parliament launched Article 7 proceedings against Hungary in 2018.
Article 7 of the EU Treaty allows for the suspension of a member state’s voting rights if it persistently breaches the bloc’s fundamental principles. If implemented, the decision would require unanimous approval by all other EU member states and could impact key policy-making processes.
