Earthquake Toll Rises in Japan: 48 Confirmed Dead

The aftermath of a powerful earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, continues to unfold with the toll rising to 48 casualties, TuraNews.kz reports citing Euronews.

Almost 100,000 Japanese residents have been compelled to evacuate their homes.

The earthquake, measuring 7.6 in magnitude and occurring on January 1, has left a devastating impact on central Japan. The tsunami threat has subsided, yet nearly a hundred thousand Japanese sought refuge in evacuation centers, such as schools and gymnasiums, overnight.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida revealed that the western coastal zone bore the brunt of the earthquake’s force. Rescue operations are underway to extract victims trapped beneath debris.

“I have received reports confirming extensive damage, including numerous casualties, building collapses, and fires. Regarding the ongoing disruptions in power, water, and communication, on-site personnel are actively engaged in restoring them,” stated Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The Prime Minister highlighted the challenges faced in the rescue operation, citing damaged roads leading to affected areas, and the difficulty in reaching all those requiring assistance.

Meteorological reports indicate that Japan experienced 155 earthquakes of varying intensities since Monday morning, with aftershocks expected to persist throughout the week.
