Earthquake in Morocco kills nearly 300, dozens injured

A powerful earthquake struck Morocco on Friday night, killing at least 296 people and injuring dozens more. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.9, was centered in the Igil region, located in the El Haouz province, which is part of the Marrakesh-Safi region, Turanews.kz reports.

The earthquake was felt in several major cities of Morocco, including Agadir, Casablanca, Kenitra, Rabat, and Essaouira. Tremors were also felt in Algeria and Spain.

The Moroccan Ministry of Interior said that the earthquake caused widespread damage in the Igil region. Many homes and other buildings were destroyed, and there are reports of people being trapped under the rubble.

Rescue workers are working to evacuate the injured and search for survivors. The government has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas.

The earthquake is the deadliest to hit Morocco since 2004, when a magnitude 6.3 earthquake killed 628 people in the northern province of Al Hoceima.
