EAEU Moves Towards Creating a Common Market for Organic Products

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is making significant strides towards establishing a common market for organic products.

As part of the implementation of the “Roadmap,” the Eurasian Economic Commission, along with member countries, has developed a draft Agreement on the recognition of organic products within the EAEU territory, according to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Trade and Integration.

Organic agriculture worldwide is governed by strict production and standardization rules. However, the growing number of standards has led to challenges with multiple certifications. To address this and meet the rising demand for organic products in EAEU countries, a regulatory framework is being established to support organic farming across the union.

The global organic market is currently valued at $174.37 billion, and it is expected to reach $233.56 billion by 2029, with an annual growth rate of 6.02%. Recognizing this trend, the heads of government in EAEU member states approved the “Roadmap” in 2021 to create a unified market for organic agricultural products. The document sets out guidelines for the recognition and free trade of organic goods within the EAEU.

As part of the Roadmap, the draft Agreement on organic product recognition has been developed. Key issues discussed during its development include the mutual recognition of products certified under international standards, such as the Codex Alimentarius.

Once adopted, the Agreement will allow producers to receive certificates confirming that their products meet these standards, enabling free trade of organic products across the EAEU’s 185 million-strong population. For Kazakhstani businesses, this opens new opportunities for exporting organic goods. The mutual recognition of certificates will simplify access to EAEU markets, boosting Kazakhstan’s export potential and enhancing its standing on the global stage.

The Agreement is expected to be signed in 2025, promoting fair competition, more affordable organic products, and improving the quality of food across the union.
