Dushanbe Celebrates 100 Years with International Half Marathon

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan. To commemorate this milestone, the city will host the 14th edition of the Dushanbe International Half Marathon on April 20, coinciding with the celebration of Capital Day.

According to a resolution by the chairman of Dushanbe, the event aims to bring together athletes from various countries, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Ethiopia, alongside professional athletes from Tajikistan. The half marathon, which covers a distance of 21.97 kilometers, has been officially recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Asia-Plus agency reports that the previous edition, the XIII International Half Marathon held on April 15, 2023, witnessed participation from athletes representing sister cities and cities engaged in trade and economic cooperation with Dushanbe, spanning across Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. Notably, the top athletes were awarded monetary prizes, with the first-place winner receiving 39,200 somoni.

While this year’s prize fund has yet to be disclosed, the anticipation for the event is high, with organizers gearing up to deliver an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike.

The inaugural Dushanbe half marathon was held in 2010, becoming a cherished tradition in the city’s annual calendar. Capital Day in Dushanbe, traditionally celebrated on the third Saturday of April, will feature not only the half marathon but also a series of other sports competitions, cultural events, and social programs.

As Dushanbe embarks on its centenary celebrations, the International Half Marathon stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to promoting sports, fostering international cooperation, and showcasing its vibrant culture to the world.
