Death Toll Surpasses 160 in Japan Earthquake Tragedy
The death toll after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan on New Year’s Day has risen to 161 from 128 overnight, according to NHK TV channel, TuraNews.kz reports.
The previously reported figure of 126 deaths has unfortunately increased as rescue and recovery efforts continue in the affected regions. The city of Wajima and Suzu each accounted for 70 fatalities, with 11 reported in Anamizu, five in Nanao, two in both Noto and Shiga, and one in the city of Hakui.
In a distressing development, the authorities of Ishikawa Prefecture, the area where the earthquake’s epicenter occurred, have released a list of 103 individuals whose whereabouts remain unknown. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate and provide assistance to those who may be trapped or stranded due to the disaster.
