Countries Ranked by Fastest and Slowest Aging Populations

A new study published in Nature Medicine reveals that the pace of aging is heavily influenced by where people live — with environmental, social, and political factors all playing a key role.

Researchers analyzed data from over 160,000 individuals across 40 countries. The findings place Denmark at the top for healthy aging, citing ideal living conditions that help slow biological aging, including clean air, social equity, and strong democratic institutions.

In contrast, Egypt ranked among the countries with the fastest-aging populations, with residents aging 2.35 years faster than their actual chronological age. South Africa and some South American countries followed closely behind. Eastern and Southern Europe also showed signs of accelerated aging.

Experts point out that air quality, gender equality, socio-economic support, and political freedoms are critical to promoting slower aging. The study also notes that people who age biologically faster are up to eight times more likely to struggle with daily tasks and four times more prone to cognitive decline.

This comprehensive analysis underscores the significant impact of national environments and governance on how populations age globally.
