Conjoined Twins Successfully Separated After 14-Hour Surgery in Türkiye

In a rare and complex operation, one-year-old conjoined twins from Pakistan, Minal and Mirha, who were born fused at the head, have been successfully separated after a 14-hour surgery in Ankara, Türkiye..

The operation took place on July 19, 2024, at Bilkent City Hospital in Ankara, under the leadership of British surgeon Professor Noor ul Owase Jeelani from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. The surgery was made possible with the support of the charity organization Gemini Untwined, founded by Jeelani, according to Sky News.

Minal and Mirha, known as craniopagus twins, were joined at the head, sharing vital blood vessels and brain tissue. The separation required an extremely high level of skill and preparation, as separating such twins is one of the most complex types of surgery. Mixed reality technology was used to create a 3D model of the twins, which helped surgeons practice and plan the procedure with greater accuracy. This technology combines real images of the patient with digital data, such as 3D scans, enhancing visibility and precision during complex operations.

The surgery was carried out in two stages over the course of three months, with the final operation lasting 14 hours. A team of medical professionals in Ankara, working alongside British specialists, successfully separated the twins while preserving their brain functions and blood supply.

According to Professor Jeelani, the girls are recovering well and are expected to return home to Pakistan within a few weeks. He also noted that they are “recovering beautifully” and should be able to lead normal lives in the future.
