
According to the South China Morning Post, the study was led by Zhu Hongbin, chief engineer at Beijing’s Earthquake Monitoring Agency.
By analyzing seismic data dating back to 1879, the researchers found that major earthquakes in the area tend to follow a certain cyclical pattern. Experts now believe that the conditions are once again forming for large-scale seismic activity.
They cited the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar in March this year as an example, warning that similar events could occur again in Central and South Asia.
