
The 91st meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (ICWC) took place in Ashgabat. The session gathered Turkmenistan’s Chairman of the State Committee for Water Management Durdy Gendzhiev, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Management Shavkat Khamraev, and Tajikistan’s First Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources Jamshed Shodi Shoimzoda. Emil Shadykhanov, Counselor of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Turkmenistan, participated as an observer.
During the meeting, the parties reviewed the results of the 2025 vegetation period and approved the projected operational schedule for the Naryn–Syrdarya reservoir cascade for the 2025–2026 non-vegetation season. Based on this schedule, the forecasted inflow to the Shardara Reservoir was agreed upon.
The delegations also reported on progress made toward implementing tasks set by the heads of state who founded the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea. The next, 92nd ICWC meeting will be held next year in Tajikistan.
“Despite challenging climatic conditions during the irrigation season, coordinated efforts among all ICWC member states ensured stable water distribution. Meetings like this form the foundation of future cooperation. Together with our Central Asian partners, we remain committed to the fair allocation of transboundary water resources, taking into account the interests of all parties,” said Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
