BYD Plans to Open Car Plant in Uzbekistan

BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to launch an automobile plant in Uzbekistan's Jizzakh region in June 2024.

According to the Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade of Uzbekistan, the plant will focus on producing hybrid and electric vehicles, with an initial plan to manufacture three models under the BYD brand.

The initiative follows the launch of a project in January, where President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and BYD President Wang Chuanfu laid the foundation for the assembly of electric and hybrid cars in the Jizzakh free economic zone. The project aims to have a production capacity of 50,000 cars annually.

In 2023, Uzbekistan imported 8,948 BYD cars, totaling $291 million. The upcoming plant signals a significant development in the country’s automotive industry, which began its passenger car production at the Asaka Automobile Plant in 1996. Initially, the plant produced models of the Korean concern Daewoo under the UzDaewoo brand until 2008. Since 2020, locally produced passenger cars have been branded under Chevrolet. Additionally, Uzbekistan’s automotive sector encompasses the assembly of KIA and Volkswagen cars, with plans to include vehicles from the Volzhsky Automobile Plant in the future.
