Bishkek Adjusts School and University Start Times

Starting July 23, 2024, all state lyceums, colleges, and universities in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, will begin classes at 10:00 AM, according to a report by 24.kg. This change was implemented by the Cabinet of Ministers to optimize the educational process and alleviate traffic congestion in the city.

The new schedule will not apply to educational institutions affiliated with Kyrgyzstan’s military and law enforcement agencies, which will maintain their current start times. Private educational institutions have also been advised to adopt the 10:00 AM start time.

Previously, school classes began no earlier than 8:00 AM, but this new regulation allows for the possibility of an earlier start time if necessary.

The decision to delay the start of classes stems from the increasing number of cars in Bishkek and the resulting traffic jams during peak hours: 7:30 to 8:30 AM, 12:00 to 2:00 PM, and 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The Bishkek City Hall has proposed the later start time to reduce traffic congestion and ease the burden on city roads.

The adjustment aims to create a smoother commute for students and residents and improve the overall quality of life in Bishkek.
