Bangladesh PM Resigns and Leaves Country Amid Mass Protests
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh has resigned and fled the country amid widespread protests that have resulted in hundreds of deaths.
Sheikh Hasina’s current location remains unknown.
On Monday, thousands of protesters stormed the Prime Minister’s residence at Ganobhaban.
The BBC reports that it is currently unclear who is leading the government. The army commander is in communication with political party leaders and is expected to hold a press conference soon.
Earlier, on Sunday, at least 90 people were killed in violent clashes between police and protesters demanding Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Among the casualties were 13 police officers who died in an attack on a police station in Sirajganj, located 100 kilometers north of the capital, Dhaka.
