Azerbaijan-Supported Carpet Weaving Training Center Opens in Kabul

A new carpet weaving training center has officially opened in Kabul with the aim of preserving Afghanistan’s traditional crafts and providing women with employment opportunities.

Funded by Azerbaijan’s International Development Agency (AIDA), the project was carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Afghanistan and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Kabul office.

The opening ceremony was attended by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Ilham Mammadov, Afghan government officials, and OIC representatives.

The center includes four workshops, equipped with 20 weaving looms, tools, and raw materials sufficient for a year. Up to 80 women can receive training at once, gaining skills that will enable them to earn a living through traditional craftsmanship.

Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of Labor, Alhaj Mawlawi, expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan and the OIC for their support in preserving cultural heritage and assisting low-income families.

OIC representative Mohammad Said Al-Ayyash emphasized that the project not only supports applied arts but also fosters cooperation among member states.

Ambassador Mammadov highlighted Azerbaijan’s ongoing humanitarian and infrastructure efforts in Afghanistan and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to international development, especially ahead of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship at the OIC Summit in 2026.
