In a statement released by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, they expressed concern over Thunberg’s detention and called upon Dutch authorities to uphold the freedom of expression for climate change activists.
“As the country currently presiding over COP29, we urge the Dutch authorities to respect the rights of climate change protesters and release those who have been detained,” stated the Foreign Ministry.
Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist, was previously detained during a demonstration in The Hague. Thunberg and other environmental activists had blocked the major A12 highway as part of their protest against government subsidies for fossil fuels in the European Union.
