Azerbaijan Assumes Chairmanship of CICA for 2024–2026 Term
Azerbaijan has been appointed as the chairman of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) for the period spanning 2024 to 2026, as announced by the CICA Council of Foreign Ministers on March 19.
This decision was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.
During its chairmanship, Azerbaijan intends to host the CICA Council of Foreign Ministers in 2024 and the CICA Council (Summit) of Heads of State and Government in 2026.
“Azerbaijan actively engages in collaborative efforts within the framework of CICA. Our country serves as the coordinator of trust-building activities in the area of ‘Development of safe and efficient transport corridors’,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The inception of the CICA dates back to October 5, 1992, when Kazakhstan introduced the initiative during the 47th session of the UN General Assembly. The primary objective of the organization is to establish an effective and comprehensive security platform in Asia. Currently, CICA comprises 28 member states, with 10 countries holding observer status.
The key documents governing the activities of CICA include the “Declaration of Principles Governing Relations between CICA Member States,” adopted in 1999, and the Almaty Act, ratified in 2002.
