Azerbaijan and China Expand Transit Cooperation via Trans-Caspian Corridor

Azerbaijan Railways (AZD) and China Railway Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at boosting international freight transportation and enhancing transport corridors.

According to the AZD statement , during a meeting in Beijing, AZD Chairman Rovshan Rustamov and China Railway President Sun Xi discussed strengthening cooperation in railway logistics, focusing particularly on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor. The discussions also covered infrastructure upgrades and digitization of transit procedures.

Freight traffic between the two countries has seen significant growth – in 2024, rail shipments rose by 47%, reaching 612,000 tons. In the first half of 2025, Azerbaijan handled 199 container block trains from China, with over 400 expected by year’s end.

The signed MoU outlines joint efforts to expand transit capacity, digitize operations, and support Chinese participation in multimodal logistics projects, including the Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd initiative.

Rustamov also met with Talgat Aldybergenov, Chairman of Kazakhstan Railways, to discuss further coordination along the China-Europe route.
