Astana’s Preparations for Potential Flooding Revealed by Emergency Situations Department

Bakytzhan Maulenberdiev, the head of the Emergency Prevention Department at the Astana Emergency Situations Department, recently shared insights into the capital's readiness for flood-prone conditions, as reported by the official website of the city's akimat.

In September 2023, a thorough examination of flood-prone areas in the city was conducted by a commission. Subsequently, recommendations were issued to district akims for 20 identified areas, advising on necessary measures such as canal cleaning and installation of drainage systems. This ongoing preparatory work has been underway since February 1.

Moreover, a month-long flood control campaign commenced in January, comprising 120 inspections in potentially vulnerable areas. These efforts included disseminating informational materials and conducting educational outreach to residents.

Maulenberdiev highlighted the extensive preparations undertaken by municipal services, including the removal of over 6.5 million cubic meters of snow, clearing more than 55 thousand linear meters of drainage channels, and maintenance of inspection wells and rainwater systems. Additionally, reserves of inert materials, such as sand and debris, have been stockpiled, with agreements in place for further supply.

In anticipation of potential flooding, a civil protection services group has been formed, comprising 599 personnel and 156 units of equipment, including 65 motor pumps.

Residents of Astana are advised to take preemptive measures in case of heavy snow melt, including clearing snow from their properties, ensuring proper drainage, and having water pumping equipment readily available. In the event of flooding, residents are urged to report promptly to the IKomek City Monitoring and Rapid Response Center by dialing “109.”
