Astana to Host Regional Environmental Summit with Focus on Energy Transition

From April 22 to 24, 2026, Astana will host the Regional Environmental Summit (RES 2026) for the first time, bringing together governments, international organizations, business leaders and experts to address pressing environmental challenges. One of the central discussions will focus on a just energy transition in Central Asia, organized by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan.

As global energy demand continues to rise, countries are seeking balanced strategies to ensure sustainable development. Experts note that the key objective is not to abandon traditional energy sources, but to make all forms of energy cleaner and more efficient. Oil, gas, coal, nuclear, solar and wind power are expected to remain part of the global energy mix, with greater emphasis on technological modernization and environmental responsibility.

Special attention will be given to the role of digitalization and artificial intelligence in optimizing energy systems, enhancing grid reliability and reducing emissions.

Kazakhstan is pursuing an evolutionary approach to energy transition. While hydrocarbons remain significant for the national economy, the country is actively implementing cleaner technologies, including carbon capture solutions, alongside expanding renewable energy capacity.

RES 2026 is expected to gather around 1,500 delegates. The initiative to hold the summit in partnership with the United Nations was first announced by President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023.
