Assembly of LRT Carriages Underway in China

The assembly of the first LRT rolling stock has begun in the Chinese city of Tangshan.

The order for 19 trainsets has been placed with the manufacturer CRRC Tangshan Co., Ltd., TuraNews.kz reports, citing City Transportation Systems (CTS).

The 60-meter-long trainsets will be equipped with an advanced automation system at GOA 4 level, enabling:

  • automatic opening and closing of doors,
  • acceleration and stopping,
  • entry and exit from the depot,
  • real-time monitoring of train conditions,
  • distance control between trains,
  • and other operator-free functions.

Each four-car trainset will accommodate over 600 passengers at full capacity. The interiors will feature durable materials, including organosilicate leather and fiberglass composite, ensuring enhanced passenger comfort.

To reduce noise levels, the trainsets will be fitted with thickened windows, sound-absorbing elements, and oversized elastic wheels.

The trains will also include modern passenger information systems, such as external and internal display panels, LCD monitors showing route details, upcoming stations, door directions, and emergency notifications.

Considering the capital’s extreme climate conditions, the front window will have an electric heating system to prevent fogging during sudden temperature changes. The air conditioning unit will have a cooling capacity of 35 kW. Currently, the production and welding of aluminum alloy body components are in progress. The first trainsets are expected to be ready by the end of May, with the first batch arriving in September for testing.

“Test operation is a crucial phase before full deployment. During this period, all infrastructure components, rolling stock, and equipment will be inspected. This includes checking track integrity, power supply systems, and telecommunications. A large dataset will be collected and analyzed to produce a comprehensive report, which will serve as the basis for the final decision on launching operations. The test phase is set to begin in September and will last several months,” said Orınbasar Agbayev, Managing Director of City Transportation Systems.

Based on passenger flow analysis on similar routes, LRT trains are expected to transport up to 25,000 passengers per day.
