“Almaty Residents Feel Minor Tremors During Seismic Exercise”
On the morning of February 23, 2024, residents of Almaty experienced tremors as an earthquake shook the city during a citywide seismic preparedness drill.
Reports of the earthquake quickly spread across social media platforms as alarmed residents shared their experiences. Official confirmation soon followed from the Seismic Station Network of NNTsSN and I LLP of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
According to the official statement released, the earthquake occurred at 10:08 am on February 23, 2024. The epicenter was located 259 kilometers southeast of Almaty, in China, classified as an aftershock. The earthquake’s energy class was recorded at 11.8 with a magnitude MPV of 5.2.
The statement also provided information about the earthquake’s perceptibility in Almaty, which was rated at 2 points.
