Almaty Museum Exhibition Opens in Hungary

On October 3, 2024, the Karcag Kincse Museum of Art in Hungary hosted the grand opening of the exhibition titled "Nomads of Kazakhstan: Past and Present." Organized with support from the Almaty City Akimat and the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Hungary, the exhibition showcases the rich cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.

The exhibition is divided into two sections. The first displays artifacts highlighting the traditional lifestyle, customs, and craftsmanship of the Kazakh people, including Kazakh folk musical instruments. The second section presents photographs capturing the natural beauty and modern landscape of Almaty.

Over 200 exhibits from the Almaty Museum Association’s collection are featured, including 13th-century silver coins (dirhams) minted in Almaty. One of the key highlights of the exhibition is a dombyra that belonged to the great Kazakh poet Abai Kunanbayuly, marking the tenth anniversary of the monument dedicated to him in Budapest.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Hungary, Abzal Saparbekuly, emphasized the significance of this cultural exchange. “The Hungarian Kipchaks have preserved their ancestral culture for over eight centuries and continue to find connections with the Kazakhs of the Great Steppe. I believe that you are a ‘golden bridge’ between our two countries,” said Saparbekuly.

Tibor Sepesi, the Mayor of Karcag, expressed his pride in hosting the event, noting the deep cultural ties between the two nations. “The artifacts on display introduce us to the everyday life and traditions of the Kazakh people, showcasing our shared values,” he said.

Lyazzat Kudaibergenkyzy, Director of the Almaty Museum Association, highlighted the importance of the exhibition, especially as it takes place in Karcag, the capital of the Hungarian Kipchaks, further strengthening cultural connections between Hungary and Kazakhstan.

The event also featured musical performances by renowned dombra player Yerkin Kudaibergen, along with works by famous Kazakh composers. Guests had the opportunity to sample traditional Kazakh delicacies.

The exhibition will run until November 20, 2024, at the Karcag Kincse Museum of Art.
