Access to Instagram Blocked in Türkiye
On Friday morning, access to Instagram was blocked in Türkiye by the Technology and Communications Council. The council has not provided details about the reasons for the blockage or its duration.
Birgün newspaper speculates that the block may be related to Instagram’s handling of condolences following the assassination of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. This decision has been criticized by Fahrettin Altun, head of the communications department of the Turkish presidential administration.
CNBC-e reports that while the technology council has the authority to restrict social networks, its decisions must be reviewed and approved by the courts within 24-48 hours. The Ankara court is expected to issue a verdict on the Instagram blockage later on August 2.
Currently, Instagram is inaccessible in Türkiye from both computers and mobile devices. Many users are attempting to use VPNs and other methods to bypass the block.
Türkiye, with a population of 85 million, has over 50 million Instagram users.
