An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck the Roshtkala district of Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region on 29 June, 2023, at approximately 10:00 AM local time, Turanews.kz reports.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 15 kilometers south of Khorog, the capital of the region, and at a depth of 139 kilometers.
There have been no reports of injuries or damage as a result of the earthquake. However, the region is seismically active and earthquakes of various strengths occur there constantly. In 2018, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the region, killing more than 4,000 people and displacing more than 200,000.
The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region is located in the eastern part of Tajikistan, bordering Afghanistan to the south. The region is mountainous and sparsely populated. It is also one of the poorest regions in Tajikistan.
