40 Tons of Contaminated Cherries Discovered on Kazakh-Kyrgyz Border

In the Zhambyl region, nearly 40 tons of contaminated cherries were intercepted while being transported from Kyrgyzstan to Russia via Kazakhstan.

Phytosanitary inspectors at control posts along the Kyrgyz border detected two shipments infested with larvae of the quarantine pest Drosophila, commonly known as fruit flies. The total volume of the contaminated cherries amounted to over 39 tons.

“For violating phytosanitary requirements, administrative fines were imposed in accordance with Article 400 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Kazakhstan. All contaminated products were promptly returned to the exporting country,” reported the State Inspection Committee of the agro-industrial complex under the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan.

Drosophila, or fruit flies, are small insects measuring about 2-4 millimeters in length, characterized by brownish-gray bodies and reddish eyes. These pests are known to cause significant damage to crops.
