18.5 kg of Smuggled Gold Seized at Turkish Airport

Six Uzbek women were detained at Izmir Airport, Türkiye, on suspicion of smuggling gold.

According to Airlinerhaber website, during a search, authorities discovered 84 gold bars hidden inside the women’s bodies, each weighing 110 grams.

The operation took place at Izmir Airport, where both passengers of Uzbek nationality and those meeting them were inspected. As a result, a total of 166 gold bars and 18 gaming consoles were confiscated. The airline agency Haber reported that seven individuals were arrested in connection with the smuggling.

On October 2, police stopped a suspicious female passenger along with two vehicles outside the airport. The initial search uncovered 82 gold bars, 18 gaming consoles, and 3 smartphones. A more thorough inspection revealed an additional 84 gold bars concealed within the women’s bodies, which had to be surgically removed.

The total weight of the seized gold amounted to 18.5 kg, with a market value of approximately 55 million Turkish liras (around $1.6 million USD). Following the operation, all six women and their alleged accomplice were arrested, and the court has ordered their detention.
