140th Anniversary of Barpa Alykulov Celebrated in Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan
The city of Jalal-Abad in Kyrgyzstan hosted a grand celebration on September 23, honoring the 140th anniversary of the renowned Kyrgyz poet Barpa Alykulov. This event is part of a broader initiative by TURKSOY, the International Organization of Turkic Culture, to commemorate Alykulov's literary legacy across the Turkic world.
The ceremonial event took place in Jalal-Abad’s central square, featuring a theatrical performance. Prominent officials, including the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration, Akylbek Japarov, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President in Jalal-Abad, Tilek Tekebaev, deputies of the Zhogorku Kenesh, and the Minister of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy, Altynbek Maksutov, attended the celebration. TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev, along with cultural representatives and the public, also participated.
In his speech, Akylbek Japarov highlighted the lasting importance of Alykulov’s literary works, calling the poet’s 140th anniversary a significant event in Kyrgyz literature. He also acknowledged recent socio-economic developments in Jalal-Abad and announced future infrastructure projects for the region.
TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev emphasized Alykulov’s foundational role in Kyrgyz classical poetry and his lasting influence on Turkic literature. He mentioned that similar commemorative events are being held throughout 2024 in countries like Turkey, Kazakhstan, and other Turkic nations.
The celebration included cultural exhibitions from all eight districts of the Jalal-Abad region, with traditional yurts on display. The theatrical performance was staged by the Barpy Alykulov Theater, adding a historical and cultural dimension to the festivities.
The event highlighted both the literary achievements of Barpa Alykulov and the region’s cultural heritage.
